Slumped over steering wheel sobbing my eyes out.
That’s what I was doing a few years ago.
I was burnt out, fed up and completely out of ideas as to how I was going to dig myself out of this hectic, emotional mess.
For months (arguably years) I tried to be all things to all people and perform amazingly in every single area of my life. Instead, I was depressed and resentful.
I constantly compared myself to others.
I didn’t know how to say no or ask for help when I needed it.
I battled an unhealthy relationship with food and exercise that was largely stress-triggered and set me miles back in my personal growth over and over again.
Fast forward to today and I’m not really any less busy per say, but what I am is far more balanced.
I wish I could tell you that that day crying in my car was the last time I ever let myself get that overwhelmed, but I’ve had to learn this lesson more than a few times.
My biggest takeaway from these periods of intense burnout?
It’s nearly impossible to serve others or do well at anything unless I take care of myself FIRST.
We all know it’s important to have a healthy body, but what about the other aspects of health – mental, physical, emotional and spiritual?
Unless you take a holistic, balanced approach to your health and life, you may be destined to spiral out of control like I did.
So how did I go from burnt out to balanced?
First, I got brutally honest with myself about where I was at.
Then, I reached out for help and accepted it.
Next, I made it my mission to foster a community of women that prioritize living a balanced, healthy life.
Ladies who want to be leaders and change the world without falling apart in the process.
If your experience sounds anything like mine, keep reading to learn how to achieve more balance in your life and business.
How to Achieve More Balance in Your Life and Business (5 Tested and True Strategies):
1 – Address, Assess and De-stress
When you’re on the brink of burnout, the first thing you need to do is come to terms with the fact that you’re struggling and in over your head.
There’s no shame in hitting a wall and feeling overwhelmed. But if you can’t address your situation, you won’t be able to change it.
Next, take an objective (as far as possible) look at your life, your emotions, your physical wellbeing and try to identify some of the things that are the source of your pain.
After you’ve assessed the factors that have thrown you off balance, it’s time to de-stress. Once you’ve identified the problem(s), you can take action.
Make a cup of tea and relax with a good book or go for a 20-minute walk. Even the smallest things can make a difference!
2 – The Strategic ‘No’ (Prioritize and Choose)
If your goal is to truly bring more balance in your life, saying ‘yes’ to everything may not be the best option for you.
There is power in saying ‘no’, especially if you want to be strong, healthy, and look AMAZING while you build a thriving business (and looking AMAZING while doing it!).
Remember, there is only so much room in your schedule, and only so many hours in a day. So when you say “yes” to something (taking on another side project, you’re saying “no” to something else.
Balance = boundaries.
And when you set clear boundaries for yourself, you’ll be better equipped to say yes to the things that truly allow you to live your best life.
3 – Mind over Matter
Mindset is huge for any woman entrepreneur who is hustling to get seen, get connected, and get paid.
If you’re a #girlboss trying to create the business of your dreams, chances are you’re not so comfortable with taking a break.
Many hard-working women have deeply rooted limited beliefs around productivity and wear “busy” as a badge of honour.
The problem is, when you measure your worth by how packed your calendar is (even if you’re constantly exhausted), you’ll never truly reap the benefits of the amazing business you’ve created.
Change your mindset and embrace the fact that being busy does not always equal being productive.
Because your worth is not defined by your to-do list.
4 – Eat, Sleep and Move Well
Healthy physical habits are essential to maintaining balance in other areas of your life. Exercise is a natural stress reliever, mood booster, and can help clear your mind when you’re overloaded with negative thoughts.
A well-balanced diet provides you with the fuel you need to maintain consistent energy levels without pumping your veins full of caffeine. Lastly, make sure you get enough sleep!
Adequate rest is key if you want a sharp mind, balanced hormones and a strong body. Your body is the only place you have to live, so if you want to bring more balance into your life make sure you treat it with respect.
5 – Build Community
There is strength in numbers and having quality relationships will elevate you beyond what you can do in isolation.
Even if you’re an introvert (like me), you can bring more balance to your life (and skyrocket your personal growth) through the power of vulnerability, community and connection with others. I recently joined a mastermind full of incredible women and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done!
As the African proverb says “if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
Running a business you love is tough.
I get it. But the more balanced you are, the more your life, business, relationships and health with flourish.
When you’re too overwhelmed all of the time, you leave the door open to burnout and stress-induced habits like emotional eating, isolation, and cycles of self-loathing.
The good news is, it IS possible to change with world AND stay healthy while you run your business. If you’re ready to be intentional about bringing more balance into your life, make sure you grab your FREE checklist (+ bonus audio!) to Overcome Overwhelm in Your Business Today.
